Is small business ready for zero trust?

The current COVID-19 situation forced a lot of us to work from home. Many of us are stuck in the home office and working remotely via the internet, using our laptops or tablets to access the data we work with. To some of us these are not the best working conditions, and yet others enjoy the perks of working at home.

Now, what if this will become our more common way of working in the future?

Several big businesses are currently looking beyond the pandemic and making plans for what lies ahead. The zero trust security model is becoming increasingly popular as large companies are sending their employees home. It is a more effective way of administering who is accessing a company’s systems - a very crucial thing to check, now more than ever. With employees working from all sorts of locations, it’s useful to have adapted security models that take that into consideration. Now that these models are being applied, working from home might become a more stable way of doing work - even once we are ‘living with the virus’.

But as always, with new working dynamics come new risks. Especially if this is how we’re planning on working in the future, we must make sure that our cyber fitness can compete with the growing amount of cyber threats.

While the zero trust model can help minimise certain risks of unauthorised access, there are still many other things that must be adapted for things to work out. And while the global situation is moving fast, a lot of small business owners have trouble keeping up.

Buying new technology might open doors to new risks, installing new programs might turn into an added security weakness. But in our situation, where things keep changing, it’s impossible for us and our technology not to change. We must use new technology to keep up and not fall behind. So what should we do?

Simple: Stay as up to date as possible. 😎

If you’re a small business owner, look at the reactions that some bigger companies have had in the face of the pandemic and follow their lead. You might want to explore a zero trust model too, if it works for your business. Look for ways that you can fortify your cyber security to ensure that even in changing times like these, your business won’t be in greater danger than it was before.
