Every 8 minutes a cyber attack Is reported

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recently published a report saying that every eight minutes a cyber attack is reported. Last year, it was only every ten minutes.

And as if the growing amount of cyber attacks wasn’t enough, their severity is growing too. 💥

With a global shift to online sources (mostly due to COVID-19), it’s becoming increasingly important for businesses to stay safe online. The more we use online services, the more cyber attackers will want to harm us, the more we rely on the Internet and the more vulnerable we will be. Cyber criminals are very much aware of this.

If your business ever finds itself dealing with a cyber security incident, you will most likely have to rely on cyber security experts who know exactly what to do. If - like most small businesses - yours doesn’t have an internal cyber expert, you’ll probably be forced to call someone in. The problem with that is, with the number of attacks being reported, experts have trouble keeping up.

Frankly, there aren’t enough cyber security experts to go around. Especially now, with cyber attacks growing in frequency and impact.

So what can you do? 🧐

If you’re part of a larger organisation, look for ways to support initiatives like the Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN) who are actively doing their best to train female cyber security experts. Initiatives like the AWSN are increasing the amount of experts with their programs and educational offers - experts that are very much needed. While you may not want to become a working cyber security expert yourself, you can support initiatives who are actively introducing new cyber experts to the industry because these experts could later on help you and your business in a state of crisis.
